Teaching and Learning Consultants (TaLCs)
The Teaching and Learning Consultant (TaLC) program is a new faculty-student partnership initiative offered through the Centre for Teaching and Learning.
TaLCs are volunteer undergraduate student leaders who receive specialized training in teaching and learning principles, as well as critical thinking, evaluation, consultation and constructive feedback skills. Participation as a TaLC is recognized under Western’s Co-Curricular Record.
Drawing on both their experiences as learners and their training, TaLCs provide informed student perspectives that can help instructors identify potential barriers to learning, improve clarity, strengthen student engagement, and enhance assessment design.
Faculty members may wish to partner with TaLCs as collaborators in the teaching and learning process through a variety of program offerings:
- Assessment Design Workshops: Structured multi-day sessions focused on reviewing and refining assessments to improve engagement, clarity and academic integrity.
- Live Review Sessions: Opportunities for TaLCs to review assignments, learning activities, and course materials in real time and provide immediate feedback from a student perspective.
- Faculty-Student Consultations: Informal conversations or dedicated consultation meetings to discuss course design, teaching approaches, assessment methods and student experience considerations.
- Additional Partnership Opportunities: Customized collaborations and feedback activities designed to support specific teaching and learning goals.
