Western Certificate in University Teaching and Learning (WCUTL)
Building Your Teaching Futures
Upon completion of WCUTL, program participants receive a certificate and a letter of accomplishment that can be listed on your CV, included in your teaching dossier, and shared during hiring, grants, and awards processes.
Overview & Purpose
The purpose of the Western Certificate in University Teaching and Learning is to engage graduate students in developing the knowledge, skills, and reflective practices and mindsets that support teaching excellence in higher education. Through a robust and flexible program of learning, practice, community building, and mentorship, participants build a strong foundation in teaching that is
- collaborative, encouraging engagement with peers and educational communities
- inclusive, fostering equitable and accessible learning environments for all students
- active, emphasizing student-centred and experiential approaches to learning; and
- evidence-informed, drawing on the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL), critical self-reflection, and exemplars to guide effective teaching decisions
Ultimately, the certificate empowers graduate students to enhance their teaching effectiveness, strengthen their academic and professional portfolios, and contribute meaningfully to student learning at Western and beyond. The presentation and group facilitation skills gained while completing the Certificate benefits participants in pursuit of a faculty position, and they are also valued by employers in business, industry and other non-academic fields.

Microteaching Programs
Choose from one of four options to complete your microteaching requirement:
- Teaching Assistant Training Program
- Teaching in the Canadian Classroom
- Advanced Teaching Program
- SGPS 9500: The Theory and Practice of University Teaching
Future Prof Series
Complete 10 Future Prof credits to meet the Certificate Requirements through the following options:
- Future Prof Series (1 credit each)
- Perspectives on Teaching Conference (up to 2 credits)
- Own Your Future: Conference on Teaching (up to 2 credits)
- Communities of Practice and Care (up to 2 credits)
- Selected online, asynchronous modules (1 – 2 credits)
Teaching Mentor Program
Written Submissions and Final Consultation
Submit the following written components and meet with a member of the TA Team for a personalized consultation to complete the Certificate:
- Teaching Dossier
- Course Outline OR a Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL) research proposal
