Faculty-Student Collaborative on Reimagining Assessment in Response to Generative AI
DESCRIPTION
Faculty-Student Collaboratives are a new type of programming that bring the student voice into conversations on teaching and learning. The first Faculty-Student Collaborative will focus on Reimagining Assessment in Response to Generative AI.
Generative AI has raised a number of concerns around traditional and historic assessment practices, creating an opportunity for educators to reimagine assessment.
This Faculty-Student Collaborative will bring together select faculty members and students from diverse disciplines to discuss the impact Generative AI has had on their assessments, and to explore alternative approaches.
This is structured as two synchronous sessions (including lunch) with independent work in between:
- Session 1 will start with a facilitated workshop on the principles of assessment and assessment design. Faculty will share ideas with their peers and receive feedback on an assessment idea that they are developing.
- After Session 1, Faculty will asynchronously (re)design an assessment that they plan to use in a Winter 2026 class.
- Session 2 will invite Faculty to share their (re)designed assessment with a panel who will provide feedback from the student perspective.
Goals
By taking part in the Faculty-Student Collaborative on Reimaging Assessment in Response to Generative AI, participants will:
- Explore the basic principles of assessment design and how to align assessment with learning outcomes and teaching values
- Gain interdisciplinary perspectives on the impact of generative AI on assessment practices from both peers and students
- (Re)design an assignment with consideration of generative AI that can be integrated into their Winter 2026 course
What to expect
- Faculty-Student Collaboratives will have diverse representation of disciplines
- Two in-person, half-day sessions in the Fall 2025 term
- The time commitment is approximately 12 hours. This includes two 4-hour sessions (including lunch) and approximately 4 hours of asynchronous assessment design work in between the two in-person half day session
- The second session will include an interdisciplinary student panel who will provide feedback on your (re)designed assessment
