ABC Online Course Design Workshop: Now Available

At Western's Centre for Teaching and Learning, our eLearning team is working hard to ensure that we are able to support instructors working to move their courses online. Western is offering a variety of options to help faculty and teaching assistants as they move their courses rapidly online. Learn more about these supports on our eLearning resources page here.

A key component of our support for online course development is the ABC Online Course Design Workshop. The goal of this workshop is student-centred rapid course development. We are recommending this process for instructors looking to shift their course from in-person to online. Participants in this process will leave the workshop with a storyboard of their new course design, and ideas for steps in the development of their online course. This process can be completed independently on our website, or in a group with a facilitated zoom session, and is flexible enough to be used by:

  • Individual instructors
  • Instructor teams
  • Departments or programs

The ABC Online Course Design workshop was developed by Clive Young and Nataša Perović at the University College London as a lightweight, streamlined process for designing courses based on sound educational principles. The Centre for Teaching and Learning at Western University and the Centre for Excellence in Learning and Teaching at Ryerson University have adapted these materials for the transition to remote and online instruction, and are available for individual and team use at both universities and beyond.

To participate in ABC Online Course Design, you only need a course outline and a set of course learning outcomes.

ABC Online Course Design consists of two components:

  1. Pre-workshop activities, to be completed on your own (30 - 40 minutes)
  2. A course storyboarding workshop, facilitated in Zoom or completed on your own (2 hours)
