Intro to Instruction

Description

Intro to Instruction is a half-day event that introduces new Western instructors (full-time and part-time) to teaching and learning strategies, resources, and policies to help you plan for a successful year of instruction at Western. Participants will have the opportunity to ask questions and clarify expectations throughout the day.

We invite you to join us in person or via Zoom.

Join us for a day of live presentations, panel discussions, and interactive sessions. Several resources relevant to new faculty are also available on this page in the "Important campus resources for new faculty" section.

Topics

  • important dates and deadlines during the academic year
  • key policies that guide exams, student conduct, and assessment of student performance
  • case studies of classroom management, academic integrity, and ethics
  • academic technologies, and eLearning support at Western

Audience

Intro to Instruction was designed for full-time and part-time faculty members (including sessional instructors, adjunct professors, and lecturers) who are new to teaching at Western.

Other faculty members who would like a refresher on teaching at Western are also very welcome to join us!

All graduate students and postdoctoral scholars are invited to register for TA Day: Graduate Student Conference on Teaching.

Registration Instructions

  1. Login to Western Connect using your Western username* and password.
  2. Go to the Event Calendars section and select the Centre for Teaching and Learning calendar, then select the program you wish to register in. Details and a description of the program will appear.
  3. Search for and select the event you wish to register in. Details and a description of the program will appear.
  4. Select the Register for this Event button.
  5. You will receive an automated confirmation email to your Western email account. 

*If you are new to Western and do not yet have a Western username, please fill out this form, or email us with your name and department.

Outcomes

By the end of the day, participants will be able to describe:

  • the structure of the academic year, including important dates for graduate and undergraduate courses
  • required information to include in a course syllabus
  • exam and assignment policies
  • responses to complex student requests and grade appeals
  • approaches to promoting students’ academic integrity
  • campus resources available to support teaching innovation, and eLearning.

What to expect

A half-day event that combines presentations, panel discussions and interactive sessions with ample time for questions.
